Dimension Number 2 is a very different environment from that of the original dimension. In that respect, spiritual translation between dimensions may result in faults or irregularities in the soul's new physical form. Typically, the new form is very dependent on certain properties belonging to the old form, as well as properties of the soul itself. Most souls fall inside the normal range, and are translated into ordinary beings. But some of them have unusual qualities that cause glitches in the system, granting them abnormal abilities.
In short, a few people that enter the Dimension will have special abilities or powers outside of the norm.
This can happen three different ways:
Dimensionally acquired. A person who was completely normal in the first dimension may obtain a unique ability or alteration upon entering the portal. The new ability usually reflects some personality type or lifestyle. Likewise, if they had an ability in the first dimension, they could emerge without it due to this change.
Directly translated. If a person had an ability in the first dimension, they will probably keep it in the second unless the aforementioned circumstances occur.
Power suppressant. Sometimes, a person with a powerful ability can acquire a complication in DN2. This might limit their abilities one way or another, causing them to be no more powerful than any other new arrival in the dimension.
So, how does this apply to you? When you make your character, you are now able to give them a special ability! However, there are a handful of simple rules to follow when doing so. Power is not a tool to be played with.
1. There is no limit to this power as it was in the first dimension. Just as your character can have any amount of battle experience or skill, they can have any ability.
2. But upon arrival, something must happen to them that balances this out. The three methods above can be used as a guideline: you may earn any new abilities that you wish, remove one that you originally had, or keep them. But any advantage you have in DN2 must be countered by a disadvantage of some sort, so as not to put them unfairly ahead of other members' characters.
3. The disadvantage must limit the advantage in a way that makes them essentially no stronger than an ordinary person just starting out. It cannot be something totally unrelated. Later on, I'll give some examples.
4. The ability can, however, evolve over time as the character becomes stronger. Either the advantage becomes greater or the disadvantage becomes less hindering.
5. The player can fully customize any advantages, disadvantages, and evolutions of the character's ability, as long as it is approved by a staff member.
6. You cannot unfairly abuse this power. Making it work exactly as you want it all the time, while untrained, is a form of powerplaying. The moderator will then decide whether or not the ability works in that instance.
Now, here are some examples of abilities. You may use ideas from the following, or you may come up with something entirely of your own design. More will be added as I see fit. Note that the disadvantages are only possible choices and can be anything other than the listed, as long as it has staff approval.
Psychic abilities
Description: This includes telepathy, telekinesis, empathy, and the like. One does not necessarily need to be a Psychic-type Pokemon to acquire these abilities.
Evolutions: Their abilities' range or strength may expand; for instance, being able to read deeper into the minds of Pokemon rather than just the surface thought, or the ability to lift heavier objects longer distances. The Pokemon may also learn Psychic-type moves that can be used in battle.
Possible Disadvantages: Fatigue from overuse, failure to control it properly, inability to discern own thoughts from others' thoughts.
Randomism
Description: This is the ability to do nearly anything imaginable. From producing random items from thin air, to performing attacks and techniques outside of the user's moveset and even defying reality.
Evolutions: Advanced Randomism may allow further and further breakage of the laws of physics and sanity. There are also a few moves that can only be learned by Randomists.
Possible Disadvantages: The power can be fickle, i.e. hard or impossible to use in situations when it is really needed; or uncontrollable and acting on its own (controlled by a mod based on the Randomist's thoughts or intentions).
Super Strength/Speed/Other Attribute
Description: The character has greater strength, speed, etc. than a normal Pokemon of their species.
Evolutions: An even greater level of attribute strength, or access to a wider variety of Pokemon moves.
Possible Disadvantages: The increase of one attribute can be balanced out by the decrease of another; for instance, higher strength but lesser speed or wit. Or, the power may only activate in a desperate situation.
Luck
Description: Most people with abnormal amounts of luck do not realize that they have it. They may turn out better in rough situations or avoid them entirely.
Evolutions: The degree of luck may gradually increase, from, for instance, finding a Blue Berry to finding a Gold Berry.
Possible Disadvantages: In addition to vast amounts of good luck, there may also be intense amounts of bad luck thrown in occasionally. In other words, the events that happen to the character have a much greater range than a normal person.
Again, there may be others; this is entirely up to you. If you want an ability, go for it, but if you don't, ordinary characters are just fine! Remember, here in DN2 we're all about creating a customizable and flexible roleplaying experience that totally suits the style and expectations of everyone.
