Stats/Item ListYou attempt to get a good grip on the table, but as hard as you pull the table doesn't even budge. A look under the table tells you a possible reason: more boxes. That table isn't going anywhere without moving some boxes out of here, but that could take a while without some help. It's actually a sizable table!

Blah: Phew. Ok, then, no extra exploring for me just yet...
On second thought, I guess those bolt cutters would be handy to have around. Why not. Better to have and not need than to need and not live. *retrieves bolt cutters*
I still need something to shorten those cue sticks, and then attach them to the boards... I wonder if anything in some of these boxes will help?
>Blah: Grab bolt cutters, and then search one of the boxes.

You grab the bolt cutters. They're a little bulky, but they could very well come in handy.
You grab a box from under the table and open it. This box appears to contain books. You dig through the box to see if there's anything else inside, but it's just books. You get a look at some of the titles:
The Destruction of the Game The Lovely Man Flight of Bridges The Memory Trainer Silent Heat Sword in the Streams Only Magic The Vacant Moons

Blah: Books. Looks like mostly fiction. Well, at least boredom is not something we'll have to worry about... I'm not much of a reader, but I might crack one open later. Might as well bring them up with me, or else finding them again might be difficult...
*grabs the box of books and brings them back upstairs, into the living room*
So, in addition to some bolt cutters I found a bunch of books. Looks like something to do while waiting for the sun to move. As for the crutches, I think I could make something work if we shorten a couple of cue sticks and attach them to the stair boards somehow. How we might accomplish that is a mystery to me though, if you have any ideas I'm all ears.
*sets the book box next to the coffee table*
>Blah: Bring up the books and see what Irene and Arnold are up to, and if they have any ideas about the crutch problem.

When you make it up to the livingroom, Arnold and Irene are already there. Arnold appears to have finished up with the rat, and placed the meat in the fridge.
Arnold: Those bolt cutters could be useful for breaking locks. I remember at school they had to search some lockers once, and they used a bolt cutters because they couldn't get the padlocks off. People put valuable stuff in locked places, so if we go out looking for stuff we should probably take those with us. Irene: *grabs The Destruction of the Game and The Lovely Man from the pile of books* Well if I don't have crutches I guess I'll be here for a while. I might be needing these a lot more than you guys. I guess you're bound to find some tools eventually.
*Arnold gains 1 point in Cooking* *Blah gains 1 point in scavenging* *Rat Meat has been added to your rations*

Blah: Eh. *yawn* I guess we've done just about all we could in one day anyway. Might as well get some sleep... tomorrow we can do a bit more exploring, and hopefully find some kind of clue as to what happened to this city.
*looks in the pile of books again and grabs Only Magic*
Guess now's as good a time as any to dream of a different world...
>Blah: Retire to sleeping quarters and read self to sleep.

Sleeping quarters as of right now is still the livingroom. Even though you may feel comfortable sleeping alone, your companions are still a bit nervous about nighttime. There isn't much light to read by, and the flashlights are currently being conserved, but you manage to get a few pages in before nodding off anyway.
'Only Magic' appears to be a little old. The pages are starting to yellow, but it still holds together. Whoever bound the book put a lot of effort into making sure it would last.
The book, instead of being a single work of fiction, appears to be a collection of legends of a sort. The intro mentions an ancient race of people that performed amazing feats. Supposedly remnants of this race are still around.
Before too long you nod off. That night you dream of a swarm of rats roaming the streets of town, and slowly growing into a flood of rodents.
The next morning you wake up to find Irene already up and reading 'The Destruction of the Game.' Arnold also appears to have just woken up. Irene is about to speak when the familiar sound of an empty belly is heard.
Irene: Heh. Sorry. I was about to suggest we grab a bite to eat before starting the day, but it appears my stomach has beat me to it. Arnold: Yeah, I'm pretty hungry myself. Wouldn't mind something to drink either. Anything but rat meat though. I wouldn't mind forgetting what that is before looking at it again.
*Arnold, Irene, and Blah are now Hungry and Thirsty*

Blah: Yeah, I could use some breakfast too... let's see which of our VAST STORES OF FOOD we can indulge ourselves with today.
*gets up and checks the kitchen*
Ugh, there really isn't a whole lot of meal-worthy food here... boy, do I miss my parents' cooking... guess we'll just have to eat smarter instead of tastier from now on.
Speaking of which, this bread doesn't look like it'll last much longer. We should probably have it now and split it between us, with some water on the side.
'Bread and water... almost makes this feel like a genuine prison. A prison with some decent reading material. Fancy that.'
>Everyone: Have a luxurious breakfast of bread and water.

The three of you sit down to enjoy... er rather... consume the bread and water. It isn't exactly a fabulous meal, but it serves its purpose.
Irene: Now I want to get that garden up and running more than anything.
Upon Irene saying this, you notice something dangling from her neck. It's the leaf pendant again. Apparently she decided it suited her.
*Irene, Blah, and Arnold are now Satisfied and Hydrated*

Blah: Hah... enjoying that stolen jewelry, Irene?
Well anyway... hmm, I just thought of something... Irene definitely isn't in the condition to travel or explore... so we'd have to split up, but there's no way to do that without leaving someone alone.
I mean, the garden should take priority in this situation, but. I really wanted to explore... I mean, I GUESS I could go alone? But there's no telling what's out there.
Meh. I guess I'll just help with the garden, and maybe later we can check out that last door that I found in the basement. I'll start by extracting as many seeds as I can from one of our tomatoes...
>Blah: Open a tomato and start picking seeds.

Irene turns away from you, slightly offended, and goes back to reading. Arnold decides to help and takes out his letter opener to help you slice the tomato open.
You each take a half of the tomato and dig through it, separating the seeds from the rest of the tomato as best you can. Between the two of you, you produce 12 seeds, but in the process you've turned the tomato into a pile of mush.
Arnold: Unless someone wants to eat that right now, it probably isn't going to keep all that well in the fridge. We may as well throw it away. It could make someone sick if it goes bad.
The seeds still have bits of mush on them, but as far as you know that doesn't make them unusable.
*You've gained 12 tomato seeds* *1 Tomato has become Tomato Mush* *Arnold and Blah have each gained 1 point in Dexterity* *Irene has gained 1 point in Literacy*

Blah: 12 seeds, huh... I have no idea how long it'll take to grow, but assuming they last, they might be barely enough to sustain us...
*gaze drifts to Irene* ...Irene, I'm sorry if what I said offended you, I only meant it as a joke. Personally I think we could stand to liven up this place a little more. The apocalypse doesn't have to be ALL stress and worry.
Would you like this tomato mush? I bet it'll leave a better aftertaste than that bread, at least!
>Blah: Offer remnants of tomato to Irene as apology.

Irene: Ugh. No thanks. Just... leave me alone. I'm gonna be here a while anyway.
Arnold shrugs
Arnold: Maybe we should give her some space while we get to clearing out that garden so we can use it?

Blah: Y-yeah. Sure. Let's get to work.
*Blah shuffles nervously into the backyard*
Shouldn't take too long to clear.
...I just realized. We're going to have to use some of our water on these tomato plants, aren't we.
>Blah and Arnold: Clear garden and prepare it for the plantening.

Arnold: I guess we will. Hopefully it rains enough that we won't have to worry about it too much. Maybe we can make a trip to the river at some point soon, though that might be a bit far with not enough payoff if it's only the two of us. I think there's a park near here that has a man-made pond. We would probably want to filter the water if we wanted to drink it ourselves, but I don't think it would matter too much for the plants.
I think I'm going to see if there aren't any gloves or hand tools in the shed we can use.
Arnold leaves and comes back less than a minute later with a hand-rake and a couple pairs of gloves.
Arnold: Hey blah, you didn't mention there was a locked box in the shed before. Was it open before or something?
*Arnold has found Gloves (2 pairs) and a Hand-Rake*

Blah: *nods* Sounds like an expedition for the future. Tomorrow, perhaps. More water never hurt anything.
*takes the gloves and starts putting them on* Oh yeah, I saw the locked chest in there but figured it wasn't worth mentioning until we found the... key?
*idly pulls out the bolt cutters and stares at them in bewilderment for a good 5 seconds*
...I'll be right back. *dashes for the shed*
>Blah: Use bolt cutters on the locked chest and open it

The bolt cutters make short work of the padlock, leaving the chest free to be opened.
Inside the chest are a bunch of power tools. A saw, a nailgun, an electric sander, probably put here to keep children from getting into them. But there were a couple other tools as well, including a hammer and a handsaw, as well as some nails.
There were also some packets of seeds, and a canister half full of what you assume to be gasoline from the smell.
*You found envelopes of Carrot Seeds, Lettuce Seeds, Onion Bulbs (8), 1 Canister of Gasoline, 1 Hammer, 1 Hand Saw, a box of nails*

Blah: Wow! The timing couldn't have been better on finding these things. I know what my next project will be! *grabs the hammer, some nails, and the handsaw, as well as the seeds*
*delivers the seeds to Arnold* Change of plans. You're on garden duty, and I have some SCIENCE to do!
...or CARPENTRY, to be more accurate.
*makes a beeline for the basement*
>Arnold: Do garden stuff for now >Blah: Go downstairs and retrieve boards and cue sticks. Saw off just enough of the cues that they'll make decent-length crutches when affixed to the front of the boards with the nails. And then do that. Proudly present finished crutches to Irene.

As you head into the house, you see Arnold put on his gloves and start to weed through the overgrown garden. You bring the planks and the cue sticks up to the backyard and get to sawing off the tip of the cuesticks used to hit the balls with. It doesn't take terribly long at all, and before you know it, you're lining up the nails and hammering them in. It's a little awkward, and you have to make sure the nails aren't sticking out, but after a little bit of work, you've got something sturdy enough to support the weight of a human being, and approximately the right height for Irene.
You hear Arnold yelling something about plants but you ignore him for now, and head straight into the living-room to present Irene with her crutches.
Irene: That was quick. Where did you even find the hammer and nails? Oh it doesn't matter. At least I'm not confined to the sofa now. Irene: Sorry about earlier. I'm just a little cranky because I didn't want you to see the pendant and think I was okay with stealing it. I just... well I just wanted it is all. It's kind of important. To me at least.
*Irene now has Crutches* *Blah has gained 1 Carpentry Point*

Blah: Ehehe... let's just say I missed making a few connections yesterday. But anyway...
It's really not a big deal. The important thing is that we're willing to keep looking out for each other... as cheesy as that sounds.
Speaking of which, I should probably go help Arnold finish up with the garden. You're welcome to join us if you want, now that you have some of your mobility back.
>Blah (and possibly Irene): Go help Arnold with the garden.
