Last night, I literally dreamed up a Game Maker game. I dreamed that I was playing it and some people were watching, I can't remember who exactly (probably Zeke and Sunday, maybe others). But the game looked like a project I could do without having to do way too much work.
It's basically an arcade space shooter where you're a blue dot and you have to kill all of the orange dots. You move with WASD and aim/shoot with the mouse, making it more-or-less a "dual stick" shooter. Some enemies have different weapons, and if you kill them they will drop it so that you can pick it up and use it. Also, you can summon allies later on to join your squad, who will have functional AI (hopefully), and they can also pick up and drop weapons in the same way. You can order your squad to enter or break formation, make them more aggressive, more defensive, or prioritize powerups. If you die, and at least one of your allies is alive, you can switch control to that ship. But if you lose all of your squad, it's game over - they are essentially your extra lives.
Here are some of the weapons I imagined. You can tell what weapons a ship has by looking at the color of its core.
Standard Gun (no color): Low rate of fire, medium damage. All ships start with this gun, and it will not drop.
Machine Gun (gray): High rate of fire, medium-low damage, slightly inaccurate.
Pinpoint Laser (red): Fires constantly. An enemy inside the beam will take more damage the closer it is to the point (where the mouse is).
Pierce Shot (green): Medium fire rate, low damage. Will pierce through enemies and walls indefinitely.
Burst Gun (yellow): Low fire rate, high damage. Has limited distance, but covers a wider area, like a shotgun.
Health Beam (pink): Medium fire rate, low damage. Will heal the target that it hits if friendly, and drain health if not.
Missile Launcher (blue): Very low fire rate, very high damage with splash. The missile will home in on the nearest enemy target. The explosion can hurt friends as well as enemies.
Spacial Shatter (black): Very low fire rate, insta-kills. Fires a shot which generates a black hole after a while, which will slowly but surely suck in EVERYTHING (allies, enemies, bullets, powerups, etc). Anything that enters the black hole is instantly destroyed. It lasts about 5 seconds and can only be used once.
Mental Manipulator (white): Low fire rate. The shot from this beam will convert a hostile ship into a friendly one, which will join your squad as-is (after getting a new coat of paint of course). It can only be used once.
And that's about all I can remember. (yeah, some of the weapons I made up just now, but most of them were from the dream) I will try to recreate this game eventually, but until then, let me know what you think! :L
